Advent Loudspeakers (Vintage 1982) (Morrisville) $225

This pair of �Large Advent� loudspeakers, model 5012, was manufactured in the early '80s, just prior to when Advent was sold to Jensen. This was the evolution of the original Advent loudspeaker designed by none other than Henry Kloss,, with a few improvements creeping in over those fifteen years, notably the switch to a ferrofluid filled dome tweeter. The sides, top and back are thick oak veneer (as distinct from a vinyl wrap), and the rounded face moulding is solid, genuine oak. They measure roughly 27� tall x 14.5� wide x 12� deep.

In their day, the original Advent loudspeaker had a well-deserved reputation for sounding at least as good as most speakers costing many times as much. Even today there are few speakers that are comparable, and they all cost a king's ransom. Owing to the acoustic suspension design where the cabinet is sealed, the bulk of the centering force is due to the difference in air pressure between the front and back surface of the cone. Consequently, the centering force is a more nearly linear function of the displacement of the cone, which leads to significantly lower harmonic distortion. The tradeoff, and the principal reason that the acoustic suspension approach remains less popular than the approach of using a stiffer suspension in a ported enclosure, is that to achieve a given level of bass, the cabinet has to be somewhat larger than a ported cabinet offering a similar level of bass. But here again there is a significant advantage over most of the speakers being made today, because most speakers with ported enclosures have muddy, underdamped bass.

I have taken immaculate care of these speakers since I purchased them new in �82 or �83. There is no damage of any sort. Nada. Zilch. I have maintained this pair in a strict non-smoking environment, and have regularly applied furniture polish to the cabinets to keep the wood conditioned. I still have the original cartons complete with the original internal padding, and this is all included of course.

The small tables that you see in the pictures are included as well, which makes these speakers even more of a bargain.

It is rare to find these genuine Advent speakers in the excellent condition that these are in. Most of what you see being sold on eBay is stuff that has not been taken care of and that has obvious damage of various sorts. Not so with this pair. This pair is immaculate, and is the exceptional find for someone looking for a loudspeaker of this sort. I was originally asking $300, and at this juncture I am lowering the price to $225. At this price, with or without the tables, these speakers are simply a steal. Nothing that you would find at Best Buy for anything close to this price would even be in the same league with these outstanding speakers. I would rather sell them locally to someone who can inspect them in person, but I will put them on audiogon or eBay before I lower the price any further.

These units went for around $350 before it was discontinued, and this was used moderately for the 3 years I have had it, usually just with DVD and BluRay, not everday TV watching, for which I used the TV speakers.
