Ben Franklin Antique Colonial American Hand Forged Double Betty Hanging Oil Lamp.
This is an Early Lighting Device used with whale oil or animal fat for use in many homes before electricity. This is a hand forged variety of those lamps. The forged iron variety was designed by Ben Franklin and was produced all over the Colonies and eventually into Europe. One evening while reading at night as he often did, Ben noticed that the chronic black smoke and soot smog was extinguished. Upon observation it came to his attention, that when two parallel strings of single Phoebe Lamps nearly touched, it stopped. He designed a new lamp with double wicks and oil reserves. When he went to France as Colonial Ambassador he took his new invention to France and it spread like wildfire. This was probably his most widely used invention in the Colonies. It was relatively safe and clean to use. It gave about four times as much light as a candle. This one has seen lots of use but is in good condition for its age. Any early lighting is a most desirable rare find and this is a treasure. About 6" high two part oil lamp with a 10" twisted hanging hook. A total of 16" while hanging a 4" deep and 2" wide. Great Collectible, Ready to use.
