Malawi Agates are found in Malawi, Africa, primarily in the southern region near the Mozambique border, especially around Ngabu and the Shire Valley. They occur within volcanic basalt lava flows where chalcedony formed from aqueous solutions filled cavities in the host rock, creating nodules and geodes over time.
The agates are often mined commercially from several locations with the Alimajo claim being the most popular site today
These agates are known for their bold, striking banding and a diverse range of vivid colors including reds, oranges, blues, greens, yellows, and purples. Some Malawi agates display classic bright red and orange banding, while others include rare varieties like blue lace agate
Most specimens range from small nodules about 1-3 inches in diameter to some larger pieces reaching up to 7 inches
