The Field Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day field execution of concrete construction projects. This is a hands-on leadership role that works full-time in the field overseeing crews while also actively participating in labor required to complete concrete work safely, efficiently, and to company quality standards. The Field Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing all field activities to ensure each project is constructed accurately, in an orderly and deliberate manner, and in accordance with the drawings, specifications, contract documents, and company expectations.
Field Leadership and Crew Supervision
• Lead, supervise, and work alongside field crews on a daily basis.
• Direct and coordinate the work of company employees, subcontractors, suppliers, testing personnel, and truck drivers as needed to maintain project flow.
• Promote productivity, accountability, teamwork, and professionalism on the jobsite.
• Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards.
Concrete Construction Execution
• Perform and oversee all phases of concrete construction, including:
• interpreting drawings and specifications for each pour
• site preparation and layout
• formwork construction and installation
• placement of rebar, embeds, anchor bolts, and other items
• concrete placement, consolidation, finishing, and curing
• operation of heavy equipment and job-related tools
• Assist with labor as needed to support daily production and successful completion of the work.
Project Layout and Accuracy
• Perform project layout and verify dimensions, elevations, grades, and alignment.
• Ensure the work is installed accurately and in accordance with plans, specifications, and tolerances.
• Identify and correct potential layout or installation issues before concrete is placed.
Planning and Coordination
• Plan daily and upcoming work activities to ensure labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractors are properly coordinated.
• Coordinate deliveries and schedules with concrete suppliers, trucking, testing labs, inspectors, and other vendors.
• Ensure materials are delivered on time, staged properly, protected as needed, and installed correctly.
• Manage equipment needs and coordinate the availability and use of tools, equipment, and machinery necessary for production.
Drawings, Specifications, and Quality Control
• Review and understand project plans, specifications, shop drawings, and related contract documents before work begins.
• Ensure all work complies with project requirements, applicable codes, and company quality standards.
• Maintain quality control throughout each phase of work and address deficiencies promptly.
• Communicate questions, discrepancies, or constructability concerns to project management before proceeding.
Safety
• Maintain a safe and organized jobsite at all times.
• Enforce company safety policies and all applicable safety regulations.
• Conduct work in a manner that protects employees, subcontractors, the public, equipment, and surrounding property.
• Identify jobsite hazards and take corrective action immediately.
Cost Awareness and Production Control
• Manage field production with an understanding of labor efficiency, equipment usage, material quantities, and job cost impact.
• Monitor concrete yield and help control waste, overages, and unnecessary costs.
• Work with project management to identify production challenges and improve job performance.
• Support overall job cost control by planning work effectively and using labor, equipment, and materials responsibly.
Documentation and Reporting
• Prepare accurate daily reports documenting labor, equipment, subcontractors, work performed, weather, deliveries, inspections, delays, and other relevant jobsite activity.
• Document quantities placed, completed work, and any issues affecting schedule, cost, or performance.
• Maintain records needed for project tracking, internal communication, and customer support.
Meetings and Communication
• Conduct and/or attend pre-construction meetings, progress meetings, coordination meetings, safety meetings, and internal staff meetings as required.
• Communicate effectively with project managers, customers, inspectors, engineers, vendors, and field personnel.
• Represent the company professionally in all jobsite interactions.
Scope Management and Change Order Awareness
• The Field Superintendent is responsible for identifying work that falls outside the original contract scope and promptly communicating those items to project management so that appropriate change order documentation and customer authorization can be obtained before the work proceeds whenever possible.
• Identify work that is outside the original contract scope, including plan changes, unforeseen conditions, owner-requested extras, or discrepancies between field conditions and contract documents.
• Promptly communicate potential change order situations to project management before the work is performed.
• Help document scope gaps, extra work, and changed conditions clearly and accurately.
• Assist in managing customer expectations regarding additional work, schedule impact, and required approvals.
• Help ensure proper authorization or documentation is obtained before proceeding with out-of-scope work whenever possible.
Qualifications
• Strong knowledge of concrete construction means, methods, materials, and sequencing.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and layout information.
• Experience with formwork, reinforcing steel, embeds, anchor bolts, concrete placement, and finishing.
• Ability to perform layout and verify accuracy in the field.
• Experience supervising crews and coordinating subcontractors and suppliers.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment and construction tools safely and effectively.
• Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to recognize scope changes, field issues, and cost impacts and communicate them appropriately.
• Commitment to safety, quality, and productive jobsite leadership.
• Ability to work outdoors and perform physically demanding labor on a daily basis.
