This 9 1/2 has a patent date of 10/12/1897. The 9 1/2 was one of Stanley's most successful block planes. So much so that it is still in production in some form today. The 9 1/2 has all the upgrades that basic block planes lack; blade advance wheel, lateral adjustment lever and the all important adjustable throat. The adjustable throat allows you to close the distance between the blade and the leading edge of the throat to allow just the slightest whisper of a shaving through. This greatly helps in preventing tear-out on the surface of wood. Conversely you can increase the throat opening if you want to take a deeper cut and hog off more wood. This plane has been completely tuned and is ready for immediate use. The sole is flat (within reason) the blade is razor sharp, the lever-cap is tight to the blade and it’s rust free.
